Fall is finally here!
It’s that time again where we pack away our shorts and brings out the scarfs. And as many may or may not know—fall is one of my MOST favorite times of the year. It may have a little to do with my slight obsession with Halloween. It is true —even at the prime age of 28— I still find myself excited about dressing up, going to haunted houses, carving pumpkins, and watching scary movies; I really get into the fall festivities. But, those are not the only reasons for my excitement— fall is a beautiful time for photo shoots! So, I thought I would discuss some fall fashion ideas for shoots.
First, I’d like to go over some basic photography tips when it comes to picking out clothing for photo shoots. These are tips that should be considered in all photo shoots, no matter what season. I’d like to call it—
Selena’s Wardrobe Rules
(these are rules I often go over with my clients upon booking shoots)
1. No tennis shoes
Tennis shoes may be comfortable for walking, but they are a definite no-no in photo shoots. Not only are they not very photogenic, but they are often distracting in a photo. Wear darker colored shoes to camouflage better in a photo (unless you have some awesome colored heels)!
2. No White Socks
This is a MUST! White socks are so distracting in a photo. We want people to stare at your face not your feet!
3. The More Layers the Better
I am a HUGE fan of layers. Cardigans, vests, scarfs, jackets are examples of layering. Layering adds colors and textures that can really enhance a photo, making it more unique and fun.
4. Limited White
The color white is often a tricky color to photograph. No matter what shape or size a person is— white is bright and can also cause unflattering photos. Your eye automatically looks at the brightest part of the photo first. We want that to be your faces not your shirt.
5. Texture is your friend
When I say texture I mean ruffles, buttons, stitching, lace, corduroy, necklaces, or anything that adds texture to your clothing. It gives the photograph (and your look) more dimension and just adds interest to the overall photo.
6. No Large Logos
Large logos are also quite distracting in a photo. You may love shopping at Hollister, but avoid the bulky logos in your family photos.
7. Mix and Match
Don’t— and I repeat— DON’T wear the same colors! The time of being one big blob of people is over! Pick a few colors and mix and match! Mixing solids and textures will separate everyone, while at the same time accenting each other’s outfits.
Now onto FALL FASHION
Autumn is a great time to bring out the LAYERS! (Yah! My favorite!)
Layering adds beautiful colors, patterns, and texture to a photo. Layers consist of—vests, hats, cardigans, scarfs, jackets, leggings, etc. Layering makes an outfit go from boring to brilliant! Below are some excellent examples of layering.
As you can see, the yellow scarf adds a beautiful texture to the photo and also accentuates the beautiful yellow tones in the background.
Another aspect of fall fashion is colors! Usually, this is the time of the year where we go from bright summer colors to more muted tones like browns, blacks, oranges, or reds. Although these colors are beautiful this time of year, they are not a requirement. Experiment with colors! You’d be surprised at how different colors can compliment the autumn atmosphere!
Here are some autumn outfit examples!

One fall trend I’d like to highlight are leggings. Leggings have exploded in fall fashion this year. The reason they are so popular is because they can transform your favorite summer dresses into fall outfits. Not only that, but leggings come in so many designs, patterns, and colors! It can be the one element that can make your ensemble POP!
Leggings add the flavor and fun into fall fashion!
This little fashionista is not only rocking the leggings, but she is all about the layers!
As you can see, there are LOTS of ways to be fashionable this fall. So, get ready to drink some hot coco and bundle up in your stylish autumn attire!
Happy Wednesday!
